When it comes to stress, many are willing to try anything to suppress it. Tension can reside in the body and mind, which can come from stress, chronic pain, anxiety, depression and more. Emotion can have a huge impact on the body physically, and finding ways to relieve the pressure can be daunting. It may feel difficult to find a solution, especially for those who have never tried any form of therapy.
What is EMT?
Emotional Freedom Technique (EMT) is a mind-body treatment that consists of tapping acupuncture points used to reduce feelings of pain or stress. Based on Chinese acupuncture methods, there are benefits to tapping on certain meridian points throughout your body. These points carry energy through them, distributing it equally to maintain emotional balance. When you become stressed or anxious, a blockage is created and the energy in the body becomes imbalanced.
How Does it Work?
Tapping these regions are meant to help access the body’s energy and psychologically manage the amygdala; the part of the brain that processes emotion. Tapping or applying pressure to these points reduces stress or anxiety, rehabilitating your body’s ability to administer energy flow. Identifying the problem in order to target a specific traumatic memory or thought you want to address is what you will be processing during the session. Your specific memory will be measured for the intensity level, which will vary.
We will acknowledge the issues you face and find a way to phrase it out loud. Then, you will tell yourself that despite this issue you face, you completely accept yourself.
Meridian Points
Emotional freedom technique treatment can be performed on multiple different meridian points. While tapping these regions, you may simultaneously recite the phrase as you move down to the next meridian point. These points include but are not limited to:
- Karate chop
- Top of head
- Eyebrow
- Side of the eye
- Under the eye
- Under the nose
- Chin
- Beginning of the collarbone
- Under the arm
This process will be continued until you feel as though the stress of the memory has been released.
Benefits
(EMT) treatment has been performed to reduce stress, depression, PTSD, and chronic joint pain. According to the Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease, 14 separate studies showed a significant decrease in anxiety after performing emotional freedom technique treatment. Another study regarding retired veterans stated that only after 6 sessions, the severity of their PTSD decreased from a score of 60 to 40.
